Danehill
A bow fronted chest with integrated bottle storage. Made from reclaimed Maple and featuring highly figured fiddleback veneers. A mixture of Georgian proportions and contemporary techniques makes for a timeless piece for the next time you open a bottle.
The inspiration for this piece was a striking bundle of veneer purchased decades ago when materials were relatively affordable. It was put away (and subsequently forgotten about) until I literally fell over it while cleaning the workshop. With the never-ending rise in labor costs and changing fashions towards square and minimalist furniture, it was going to be a challenge to showcase this incredible parcel of timber and harder again to find a client willing to pay.
A series of small jobs for various clients involved in the wine industry who were downsizing their living arrangements and leaving their much loved family homes (and the wine cellars that were so popular in older homes) for the low maintenance and user friendly modern houses was a pattern that I saw several times. Lacking the charm and more importantly, a safe and dark spot for their cherished bottles, gifted or collected over the years, many of them being sentimental.
A dark and musty walk down a steep flight of stairs into a well stocked cellar has been replaced with cardboard boxes on the floor in the guest bedroom. The ritual of choosing the appropriate bottle for dinner or to be enjoyed after a long day was being lost.
It seemed like a opportunity to solve a common problem, a chance to consolidate valuable offcuts that cant be wasted and finally put some lovely timber to use. Without a specific buyer in mind and no deadline in sight - it proved a chance personally to challenge myself with a timeless design with a contemporary twist.
For the teetotallers out there - the drawers can be adapted for a more conventional use.
